As you say, trust is critical. My father was not even handed where punishment was concerned. Things I thought he’d kill me for didn’t always bother him. Things I thought were no big deal, he’d go ballistic. I never wanted my son to be afraid of me. I never punished him the first time my son did something he shouldn’t. We would discuss what he did, why it was wrong and what would be suitable punishment should he choose to do it again. He never repeated something he shouldn’t do a second time.
